The Perfect Bocce Court Location
Selecting the ideal location for your bocce court or courts is one of most important factors in adding a court to your yard, facility or park. While there are obvious factors, like the need for a long, level surface, you'll also want to consider that bocce is a very social game and the most successful leagues are usually those placed near patios, bars or other gathering places.
Areas to Consider
Make Sure it's a Long, Flat Surface
Depending on whether you feel the need to install an official 13' x 91' court or some other size, you are going to need a very long and flat space with decent drainage opportunities. You'll also need to consider whether you any decking around your court. Read more about bocce court dimensions to help you determine the total space you will need.
Like most synthetic grass products, bocce turf is tufted in 15' widths and in virtually any length one requires. This means that XGrass can provide a completely seamless playing surface.
Areas to Consider
Make Sure It's a "Social Space"
Bocce is a very social game...and one that is often played while enjoying a nice snack or beverage with a group of people. So, the most successful locations often feature plenty of room for both the teams and spectators as well as close proximity to food and drink.
Just remember that bocce can be very fun and groups can get loud. It's often best not to put them too close to sound-sensitive spaces like the 18th green, meeting rooms or the neighbor's bedroom.
Other Considerations
Drainage Options
Finding an area that provides the extremely flat surface needed for proper ball roll with the slope needed for drainage can be very challenging. One option is to build the court on a raised surface, but the best option typically includes some type of turf sub base that doubles as a drainage tile. How Many Courts Do You Need
For communities, country clubs and other businesses and organizations adding bocce courts, you'll need to consider how many courts you want. Oftentimes, building multiple courts will help ensure the success of one's bocce program or leagues.
Make it a Multi-functional Court
While not for bocce purists, we have had clients create multi-functional courts (like the one shown here) that double as practice putting greens while others have designed their courts with enough room to serve as cornhole courts.
Consider the Entire Space
As with most construction projects, you may want to consider what else you can do with the space surrounding your bocce court. It's very common for our clients to add in other surfacing options from the Recreational Group like a VersaCourt shuffleboard court or Tour Greens putting green.
